Flying Fun...

Today, as part of this term's topic 'High in the Sky', the Polar Bears have been modifying our paper plane designs and testing them out to see which adjustments can have the best impact upon flight. The furthest flying distance we recorded was over 8m. We can't wait for next week to try and improve our designs even more!!

Class 6 Budding Artists

Class 6 have had a fun afternoon in their Art learning.  We are currently learning about Georgia O'Keeffe and her style of artwork.  We recognised that she drew flowers and natural objects very close up.

First, we looked at making different marks with our sketching pencils to match her style.  Then we went outside in this beautiful weather to practise our observational skills.  The children produced some fantastic sketching of the flowers in our school garden.  Well done Class 6!

Class 3 Sports Superstars

The Koalas have had a fantastic time in PE this morning.

We were out in the beautiful sunshine practicing our ball skills.

The children had a fantastic time practicing different ways of rolling and stopping the ball. We certainly have some keen bowlers (and potential footballer) in our class!

Well done class 3

It's actually Rocket Science!

Year 5 have been selected to help Tim Peake with an important experiment. We have planted 100 rocket seeds which have been on the ISS for 6 months and 100 that have stayed on earth. We are busy predicting what the difference between the two packets will be.
For now we are checking daily...and watering carefully...Our first set of data will be collected on Day 10...watch this space!

Captains Table 19th April

Congratulations to the children in class 3 who made it onto captains table this week.

Olivia, Holly, Kiera, Bailey, Belle, Phoebe and Daisy with the captain
 Miss White!

The children are given a special seat in the dining hall and extra special food to eat.

This is a reward for good manners and trying new foods at dinner time during the week.

Well done!

Y3 - An experience of India

As part of Year 2's current topic 'The World and Me' we have been looking at the story Around the World in 80 Days.  So far in our story, Phileas Fogg has left his home, travelled across Europe and today has arrived in India.

In Literacy we are practising writing setting descriptions, so in our Literacy lesson today, we took a trip though the Magic Mirror to India to experience what it is like.  We saw some beautiful temples, some interesting animals, and heard some fantastic sounds.

We were even lucky enough to have a visitor in school who taught us about the 'Tabla' drums, giving us the chance to practise our own Indian style music.

The children all came up with some fantastic descriptive sentences, engaging all of the senses; such as "the food spices were as hot as the blazing sun"; "the shimmering dew on the jungle leaves" and "the soft, crunchy sand fell through his fingers".  Well done Year 2!

Jack, his mum and the giant!

Some brilliant hotseating in class four this morning with Jack, his mum and the giant answering all our super questions.

There are some strange goings on in EYFS!!

Last Tuesday when the EYFS children arrived at school, a strange egg had appeared in the outdoor area! When the mother didn't come back, the teachers moved it to a warm, sheltered spot.

With huge excitement today, the children have discovered that the egg has hatched!! "Look, look, the egg has hatched...come and see!" one child cried!

There was a lot of talk about what it could be..."I think it's going to be a dinosaur!", "I think it's going to be a chick!", "I think it's going to be a lizard!"

Some of the children decided that they were going to be 'egg detectives!' They went off to find magnifying glasses from the investigation area and set about hunting for clues!

As yet we haven't seen anything live, but who knows where 'it' could be lurking!

Keep your eyes peeled if you venture to foundation, you never know what you might find!!

Betty the Pig

Penistone Show's mascot for 2016, Betty the Pig, came to visit yesterday. The children loved climbing in the pig pen and being allowed to stroke them.

Penistone show pigs

Penistone St John's meets the Penistone Show Pigs

Our children have had a very exciting morning meeting these piglets.  They are only 3 months old, and visited our school today as one pig has been selected as the mascot for the Penistone Show this year.  As a school, we voted on our favourite names for the pig, and it was decided that she is to be called 'Betty'.  It was lovely to welcome both Betty and Lola to our school!
